Technointegrity Revisited

In my new role as a technology leader in my SD I have the wonderful opportunity of supporting teachers in technology.  Recently I attended a workshop with a teacher about digital storytelling.  Remarkably, though I have extensive experience with digital stories, I learned something new about the difficulties this medium presents to teachers.  Many teachers endorse students using Google images at will with little regard for copyright infringement.  This was evident at the workshop when participants experienced great difficulty when asked to locate copyright free material for their digital stories.  It begs the question:  If educators are not familiar with the copyright laws, how can we expect our students to be?  It is important to note that most individuals didn’t even realize that they should include a bibliography at the end of their stories.  For me, this simply reinforces the notion that in order to prepare our students for the 21st Century, we as educators, must get out of the 20th Century.  As teachers and leaders in education we must model academic integrity for our students.  This requires us to continually familiarize ourselves with the laws of copyright which incidentally, are currently under review in the House of Commons.
